Mr. Ramadan is a prominent Egyptian lawyer and human rights advocate. He has defended a wide variety of economic, social and cultural rights and legally represented human rights defenders and victims of torture in Egypt. On 10 December 2018 Mohamed Ramadan was arrested in Alexandria, Egypt. He is accused of several charges, including “belonging to a banned organization” and “spreading false news through social media.” He is currently being held in pre-trial detention. The arrest and detention of Mohamed Ramadan appears to be a result of his legitimate defense of human rights in Egypt. Egyptian authorities have previously harassed Mr. Ramadan as part of a wider crackdown on human rights defenders. The Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights is calling for solidarity and asks that you take action now on behalf of Mohamed Ramadan: All human rights defenders should be able to act without fear of reprisals. Your act of solidarity could help make a difference in this situation . Due to the sensitivity of the situation, we are asking members to take action in the name of their own organization or as individuals.
