Over the last couple of months, ESCR-Net took solidarity actions following two serious cases of corporate abuse that required international attention. The first case took place in Brumadinho, Brazil on 25 January 2019 – where a dam built by Brazilian multinational corporation Vale exploded, unleashing a wave of toxic mud that killed or disappeared more than 300 people, the deadliest mining tragedy of its type that the world has seen in half a century. This was a preventable and forewarned disaster. .CAWG members joined an urgent solidarity action by reviewing, collectively and individually endorsing and helping to disseminate letters initiated by members Justiça Global and FIDH, in alliance with Justiça nos Trilhos. The second case took place in Sahn Malen Chiefdom in Pujehun District, Sierra Leone, on 21 January 2019 following a violent incident between local communities and military personnel deployed to protect the palm oil plantations of the agribusiness Socfin Group in the area. As a result of the incident and ensuing raids in local communities, two civilians were shot dead, allegedly by military personnel. Further 15 people were arrested, including a member of parliament, and more than 2,500 people were forcibly displaced. Via the System of Solidarity, ESCR-Net sent a collective letter to the President of Sierra Leone to express concern regarding this incident, which is part of a wider land conflict between local communities and Socfin Group. The secretariat has facilitated initial contacts between members facing Socfin violations in different countries. This or the Brumadinho case could evolve into a request for more coordinated strategic case support via CAWG. ESCR-Net mobilizes the collective strength of members to provide solidarity in moments of threat or imminent violations affecting fellow members, their communities and allied human rights defenders via the System of Solidarity (SOS). Please feel free to contact Ruben at rkondrup@escr-net.org if SOS urgent action is needed. In addition, any member of CAWG is welcome to post requests for member-to-member support via our shared Google Group: escr-net-cawg@googlegroups.com. Finally, members are welcome to request more coordinated and robust strategic case support via CAWG, through the following criteria and process: https://www.escr-net.org/node/366374.
